Brown Mallee Burl Timber

Brown mallee burl is a stunning figured native Australian timber. It can have a distinctive mix of golden brown heartwood with contrasting pale sapwood or be plain brown. Mallee trees are common scrubland vegetation and have a propensity for growing burls (lumpy growths that form on roots, trunks and branches as a result of the abnormal development of bud growth cells). Burls contain twisted, compact wood that is tougher than the wood from the rest of the tree and distinctively beautiful. Mallee is derived from the aboriginal word mali meaning water. The thin, straight, trunks of the mallee are ideal for didgeridoo making. Aboriginal people select hollow mallee trunks, then encourage termites to further enlarge the hollow until the trunk is suitable for a didgeridoo.
