Black Heart Sassafras Timber 

The bark of the blackheart sassafras tree is aromatic and has been used for brewing sassafras beer.  The 1889 book The Useful Native Plants of Australia records “The fragrant bark of this tree has been used as tea in Tasmania.” Blackheart sassafras is native to Australia, with wood that is grey to golden brown with a very fine grain. Some blackheart sassafras trees are infected with a fungus which causes very attractive smokey grey streaks within the timber.
